KFC looks simple on the menu: chicken, a couple of sides, maybe a biscuit. For anyone counting carbohydrates, though, the numbers change a lot depending on the piece, the coating, and the sides. This guide lists what a nutrition database shows for KFC chicken pieces, sandwiches, tenders, bowls, sides, and sauces, then walks through four example meals so you can see how much a few choices move the total.
Quick answer: On the figures we found, the chicken itself is a small part of the carbs. An Original Recipe breast lists 11 g and the grilled breast lists 0 g. The sides, biscuit, and bowls do the heavy lifting: a Famous Bowl lists 81 g and an individual order of Secret Recipe Fries lists 41 g. Our four example meals ranged from 8 g to 144 g of carbohydrate. This is general education, not medical advice, so ask your care team what range fits you.
Why KFC is different from other chains
At a burger place, the bun is the main carb. At KFC the breading is the main carb on the chicken, and then the sides add another layer. A fried piece is coated in flour, which is why the Original Recipe and Extra Crispy columns below are higher than the grilled column. Then come the sides, and many KFC sides are starchy: potatoes, macaroni, biscuits, corn, and baked beans. A meal that looks like “just chicken” can end up near 150 g of carbs once you add a bowl, fries, and a biscuit. If you already read labels, our guide to reading nutrition label carbs covers the habits that make this easier.
Where these numbers come from
KFC’s own nutrition pages were not reachable when we built this guide. Every number here comes from FastFoodNutrition.org, a third-party database that lists KFC as its source. Its pages carry update dates from November 2019 to May 2023, and most say February 2022. We could not cross-check any figure against a second source, so treat this page as a comparison tool, not an official label. Menus change, so confirm in the KFC app before you order. A dash in any table means the page did not list that value, which is not the same as zero.
Chicken pieces: Original Recipe vs Extra Crispy vs Grilled
The table shows one piece of each type, using the values listed for each piece. Fiber and sugar were listed for only some of the pieces, so they are left out of the table.
| Piece | Original Recipe | Extra Crispy | Grilled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breast | 390 cal, 11 g carbs, 39 g protein | 530 cal, 18 g carbs, 35 g protein | 210 cal, 0 g carbs, 38 g protein |
| Drumstick | 130 cal, 4 g carbs, 12 g protein | 170 cal, 5 g carbs, 10 g protein | 80 cal, 0 g carbs, 11 g protein |
| Thigh | 280 cal, 8 g carbs, 19 g protein | 330 cal, 9 g carbs, 22 g protein | 150 cal, 0 g carbs, 17 g protein |
| Wing | 130 cal, 3 g carbs, 10 g protein | 170 cal, 5 g carbs, 10 g protein | 70 cal, 0 g carbs, 9 g protein |
Two things stand out. First, the coating matters: an Extra Crispy breast lists 18 g of carbs, 7 g more than the Original Recipe breast and 18 g more than the grilled one. Second, the thigh and breast are the larger pieces, and they carry the most carbs, while a wing or a drumstick stays low. The same database lists an Original Recipe breast without skin or breading at 160 calories, 2 g of carbs, and 31 g of protein, but the serving size is given only as “116” with no unit and no date, and it is not something you can assume the restaurant will do, so we do not build a meal around it.
Bucket math
If you are sharing a bucket, add the pieces up rather than guessing. This example assumes the bucket holds two of each piece type, which is an assumption of ours, not a KFC standard.
| 8-piece bucket (2 breasts, 2 thighs, 2 drumsticks, 2 wings) | Total carbs (g) | Carbs per piece (g, average) |
|---|---|---|
| Original Recipe | 52 | 6.5 |
| Extra Crispy | 74 | 9.25 |
| Grilled | 0 | 0.0 |
An 8-piece bucket of Original Recipe adds up to 52 g of carbs from the chicken, which is an average of 6.5 g per piece. Switching the same bucket to Extra Crispy adds up to 74 g, an extra 22 g across the bucket. Grilled lists 0 g. That is only the chicken. Biscuits, sides, and sauces come on top, and a real bucket may hold different pieces, so use your own count.
Sandwiches, tenders, bowls, and pot pie
These items list a full carb value on our source. They mix breading, buns, potatoes, and gravy, so the totals climb fast.
| Item | Serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crispy Twister | 1 sandwich | 630 | 53 | – | 28 |
| Chicken Littles (Original) | 1 sandwich | 300 | 27 | 1 | 14 |
| Extra Crispy Tenders | 2 tenders | 270 | 16 | 1 | 20 |
| Extra Crispy Tenders | 3 tenders | 410 | 24 | 1 | 29 |
| Famous Bowl (mashed potatoes with gravy) | 1 bowl | 740 | 81 | – | 26 |
| Mac & Cheese Bowl | 1 bowl | 660 | 57 | – | 27 |
| Chicken Pot Pie | 1 pot pie | 720 | 60 | 7 | 26 |
The Famous Bowl (81 g) lists more carbs than every fried chicken piece in the first table combined, and the pot pie is 60 g with 7 g of fiber. The tenders are more moderate: three tenders list 24 g. The Mac & Cheese Bowl page has no update date. Fiber and sugar values were not listed for several of these, so there is no fiber column filled in for them.
Items with no carbohydrate value listed
Some popular items have calories and protein on the source but no carb number. We did not guess. For these, use the KFC app’s nutrition calculator to find the carbs for your exact order.
| Item | Calories (as listed) | Protein (g) | Carbs listed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken Sandwich (Classic and Spicy) | 620 to 650 | 34 | No |
| Colonel’s Original Sandwich (flavors) | 470 to 540 | 24 | No |
| Double Down (Original and Spicy) | 930 to 950 | 67 to 68 | No |
| Popcorn Chicken Nuggets (Kids to Large) | 290 to 620 | 13 to 27 | No |
The Double Down has no bun, which can look like a lower-carb option, but the page does not list carbs and shows 930 to 950 calories, so there is nothing here to confirm that. The calorie ranges cover several flavors, which is why they are shown as ranges.
Sides
Sides are where a KFC order is won or lost. The source lists the individual size, and the family size is much larger (for example, the individual mashed potatoes list 110 calories while the family size lists 460), so a shared family side can multiply these numbers. Serving sizes on several pages have no unit, so they are not shown.
| Side (individual size) | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green beans | 25 | 5 | – | – |
| House side salad, no dressing | 15 | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| Sweet kernel corn | 70 | 16 | 2 | 2 |
| Corn on the cob (3 inch) | 70 | 17 | 2 | 3 |
| Mashed potatoes, no gravy | 110 | 17 | – | – |
| Mashed potatoes with gravy | 130 | 20 | – | – |
| Mac & cheese | 140 | 17 | 1 | 2 |
| Coleslaw | 170 | 14 | – | – |
| Macaroni salad | 140 | 14 | 0 | 9 |
| Potato salad | 340 | 19 | – | – |
| BBQ baked beans | 190 | 34 | 7 | 15 |
| Potato wedges | 270 | 34 | – | – |
| Secret Recipe Fries (1 serving) | 320 | 41 | 3 | 0 |
| Biscuit (1) | 180 | 22 | – | – |
| Cornbread muffin (1) | 210 | 28 | 1 | 11 |
The lowest carb options are green beans (5 g) and the house side salad without dressing (3 g). The highest are the BBQ baked beans (34 g, with 15 g of sugar), potato wedges (34 g), and Secret Recipe Fries (41 g). Mashed potatoes with gravy list 20 g against 17 g without it, so the gravy accounts for roughly 3 g on these two pages. Coleslaw lists 14 g of carbs but no sugar value. The macaroni salad lists 9 g of sugar out of 14 g of carbs, which is worth confirming in the app before relying on it.
Sauces and add-ons
Small cups add up. A honey packet is 8 g and a honey BBQ cup is 11 g, which is as much as an Original Recipe thigh (8 g) or breast (11 g). Ranch and buttery spread list far fewer carbs.
| Sauce or add-on | Calories | Carbs (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Honey sauce packet | 30 | 8 |
| Honey BBQ dipping sauce cup | 45 | 11 |
| Creamy ranch dipping sauce cup | 130 | 2 |
| Gravy (with bites) | 50 | 7 |
| Colonel’s buttery spread | 35 | 0 |
The gravy line is the page’s gravy with bites, and it shows no update date.
A worked example: four meals
These meals use only values from the tables above, and the arithmetic is shown. They are illustrations, not recommendations, and your own best order depends on your goals and your care team’s advice.
| Meal | What is on it | Carb arithmetic (g) | Carbs (g) | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Classic plate | Original Recipe breast, Original Recipe thigh, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuit, coleslaw | 11 + 8 + 20 + 22 + 14 = 75 | 75 | 1150 |
| B. Same chicken, lighter sides | Original Recipe breast, Original Recipe thigh, green beans, coleslaw | 11 + 8 + 5 + 14 = 38 | 38 | 865 |
| C. Grilled plate | grilled breast, grilled thigh, green beans, side salad | 0 + 0 + 5 + 3 = 8 | 8 | 400 |
| D. Bowl, fries, and biscuit | Famous Bowl, Secret Recipe Fries, biscuit | 81 + 41 + 22 = 144 | 144 | 1240 |
Meal A, the classic plate, comes to 75 g of carbs. Keeping the same two pieces of chicken and swapping the mashed potatoes with gravy and the biscuit for green beans takes the total to 38 g, a difference of 37 g, with no change to the chicken. The grilled plate comes to 8 g, which is 67 g lower than the classic plate. Meal D shows the other direction: a Famous Bowl with fries and a biscuit reaches 144 g, which is 136 g more than the grilled plate. The side salad is counted without dressing, so add the dressing if you use one. If you are checking your numbers after a meal like this, our post-meal glucose tracker and CGM reading guide show how to look at what your own readings do, and a short walk can be part of that picture, as we cover in walking after meals.
Ways to order that change the numbers
These are order choices drawn from the tables, not medical advice.
- Choose the side before the chicken. Between green beans and a biscuit there is a 17 g difference, and between green beans and Secret Recipe Fries there is a 36 g difference.
- Ask whether grilled chicken is available. It is not on every menu, but when it is, it lists 0 g of carbs for the pieces we checked.
- Count the biscuit as a side. At 22 g, it is bigger than a mashed potato side.
- Watch the sauce cups. Honey and honey BBQ cups add 8 to 11 g each.
- Be careful with family sizes and shared sides. The numbers above are for individual sizes.
- Look up the items with no carb number before you order them. The Chicken Sandwich, Double Down, and Popcorn Chicken have none on our source.
For comparison with a chicken-focused chain whose menu is built differently, see our Chick-fil-A with diabetes guide, and for the full list of restaurants we have covered, see the restaurant hub.
Common mistakes
- Counting only the chicken. The sides, biscuit, and sauces often hold more carbs than the piece does.
- Assuming bunless means low carb. The Double Down has no bun, but our source lists no carbs for it at all.
- Treating a dash as zero. Several pages did not list fiber, sugar, or carbs. A missing value is not a zero.
- Mixing individual and family sizes. The family size is far larger than the individual.
- Trusting old data. Pages here are dated 2019 to 2023, and recipes change.
- Skipping the app. The KFC app’s calculator is the better source for your exact order.
Questions to bring to your appointment
- What carbohydrate range should I aim for at a restaurant meal?
- Should I be tracking carbs, calories, or both when I eat out?
- How should I think about sauces and sides that add sugar?
- Would a CGM help me see how different meals affect me?
- Is there a way I should plan for shared family meals and buckets?
Frequently asked questions
How many carbs are in KFC fried chicken?
It depends on the piece and the coating. On the nutrition database we used, an Original Recipe breast lists 11 g of carbohydrate, a thigh 8 g, a drumstick 4 g, and a wing 3 g. Extra Crispy pieces list more (breast 18 g), and Kentucky Grilled Chicken lists 0 g of carbs for the pieces we checked. These are database figures, so confirm them in the KFC app.
Is grilled chicken at KFC a better choice for people with diabetes?
On carbs alone, the grilled pieces in our source list 0 g, compared with 3 to 18 g for the fried pieces. Grilled chicken is not available at every location, and the sides still carry most of the carbs in a typical meal. Ask your care team what carb range fits you, and check the app for what your restaurant offers.
What are the lowest-carb sides at KFC?
In the individual sizes we found, green beans (5 g) and the house side salad without dressing (3 g) are the lowest. Coleslaw lists 14 g, mashed potatoes 17 g, and mac and cheese 17 g. BBQ baked beans (34 g), potato wedges (34 g), and Secret Recipe Fries (41 g) are among the highest.
Does the gravy add carbs?
Comparing the two individual mashed potato pages, gravy took the total from 17 g to 20 g, a difference of 3 g. That figure comes from two separate database pages dated 2019, so treat it as approximate.
Why are some KFC items missing carb numbers here?
Several pages on our source list calories and protein but no carbohydrate value, including the Chicken Sandwich, Colonel’s Original Sandwich, Double Down, and Popcorn Chicken. We did not estimate them. The KFC app’s nutrition calculator is the place to look them up.
Are the KFC numbers on this page current?
Not necessarily. The pages we used show update dates from November 2019 to May 2023, and most say February 2022. KFC changes recipes, portion sizes, and menus, and sizes can vary by location. Use these tables to compare items and then confirm in the KFC app.
How should I compare a bucket meal to a single meal?
Add up the pieces each person will eat, then add the sides. The bucket example in this guide shows that an 8-piece bucket of the Original Recipe adds up to about 52 g of carbs from the chicken, and Extra Crispy about 74 g, before any sides, biscuits, or sauces. Your own number depends on which pieces you take.
