Subway looks like an easy place to eat with diabetes, since the vegetables are right there. But the bread, the sauces, and the sides can turn a sandwich with 11 grams of carbohydrate into a meal with 150. This guide puts real numbers next to the common choices so you can see where the carbs come from and build an order around your own targets.
Quick answer: The biggest carbohydrate drivers at Subway are the bread or wrap, sweet sauces, chips, cookies, and sugary drinks. The published numbers we checked put a 6-inch Oven Roasted Turkey sub at 39 g of carbohydrate, the same turkey as a No Bready Bowl at 11 g, and a 21 oz Coca-Cola at 71 g by itself. A bowl or salad with a lower-sugar sauce and water or unsweetened tea is the lowest-carb route. This is general education, not a meal plan. Your clinician or dietitian can tell you what carbohydrate range fits you.
A note on these numbers
Subway’s own nutrition pages were not reachable for this article, so the figures come from FastFoodNutrition.org, a third-party database that lists Subway as its source. The sandwich figures are marked as updated in December 2022, and most bowl, salad, sauce, and drink figures as updated in March 2021. Subway changes recipes and menus, and a few pages were missing fiber or sugar values. Treat every number here as a good estimate, not a guarantee, and check the Subway app or the nutrition label on your order before you rely on it. Our guide to reading nutrition label carbs explains what to look for.
Start with the bread: it sets your carb floor
In a sandwich, the bread is the largest single source of carbohydrate. A 6-inch Italian (white) bread has 36 g, and the other breads and wrap are higher. A footlong doubles the bread, which you can see in the turkey sub: 39 g of carbohydrate at 6 inches and 79 g at a footlong.
| 6-inch bread | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Italian (white) | 160 | 36 | 3 | 3 | 7 |
| Hearty Multigrain | 190 | 36 | — | — | 7 |
| Honey Oat | 190 | 39 | — | — | 8 |
| Flatbread | 220 | 41 | — | — | 8 |
| Wrap | 300 | 50 | 2 | 2 | 8 |

Two things stand out. First, a wrap is not a low-carb swap here: at 50 g it has more carbohydrate than any of the breads. Second, the multigrain and white breads are about the same on carbohydrate, so choosing multigrain does not by itself lower the load.
Whole subs: what common 6-inch orders contain
| 6-inch sub | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oven Roasted Turkey | 260 | 39 | 4 | 6 | 20 | 790 |
| Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki | 340 | 54 | — | — | 24 | 790 |
| Italian B.M.T. | 360 | 39 | — | — | 19 | 1,160 |
| Meatball Marinara | 410 | 48 | 4 | 7 | 20 | 1,080 |

The teriyaki sub has the most carbohydrate of the four, at 54 g, even though it has fewer calories than the meatball sub. Sweet sauce is part of the reason. Footlong versions double the totals: the footlong turkey lists 79 g of carbohydrate and 1,580 mg of sodium.
The bowl and salad route
Subway’s No Bready Bowls are the sandwich fillings served without bread. Compare the same turkey: 39 g as a 6-inch sub, 11 g as a bowl. That difference of 28 g is the bread (the comparison is approximate, since the sub and bowl pages were updated at different times).
| Bowl or salad | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey Breast bowl | 160 | 11 | — | — | 25 | 1,030 |
| Oven Roasted Chicken bowl | 200 | 11 | — | — | 27 | 660 |
| Steak & Cheese bowl | 370 | 15 | 3 | 7 | 36 | 1,320 |
| Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki bowl | 300 | 33 | 3 | 22 | 34 | 1,020 |
| Meatball Marinara bowl | 520 | 33 | 8 | 14 | 28 | 1,520 |
| Veggie Delite salad | 50 | 9 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 65 |
| Turkey Breast salad | 110 | 11 | — | — | 12 | 570 |
| Oven Roasted Chicken salad | 140 | 10 | 4 | 4 | 19 | 280 |

Not every bowl is low-carb. The teriyaki bowl has 33 g of carbohydrate and 22 g of sugar, and the meatball bowl has 33 g because of the marinara. Sodium is also high in several bowls, and a few exceed 1,000 mg. If you have high blood pressure, our blood pressure tracking guide and your clinician can help you decide how much that matters. The listed salads do not say whether dressing is included, so assume it is not.
Where the hidden sugar is: sauces and dressings
Sauces add flavor, and some add sugar. Note that the serving sizes differ, so compare the carbohydrate column rather than assuming equal amounts.
| Sauce or dressing | Serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sugars (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mustard (yellow and deli brown) | 2 tsp (10 g) | 5 | 1 | 0 |
| Mayonnaise | 1 tbsp (15 g) | 110 | 0 | 0 |
| Chipotle Southwest | 21 g | 100 | 1 | 0 |
| Fat-free Honey Mustard | 21 g | 30 | 7 | 6 |
| Fat-free Sweet Onion | 21 g | 40 | 9 | 8 |
| Fat-free Italian | 2 oz (57 g) | 35 | 7 | 4 |
| Ranch | 2 oz (57 g) | 320 | 3 | 2 |

“Fat free” does not mean low carb. The fat-free sweet onion and honey mustard sauces have 9 g and 7 g of carbohydrate in a small 21 g serving, while the regular Chipotle Southwest sauce has 1 g. Mayonnaise and ranch have almost no carbohydrate but a lot of fat and calories, which matters for weight and heart health. Mustard and vinegar are the lowest-carb flavor options.
Cheese and add-ons
| Add-on | Serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Provolone cheese | 2 half circles (14 g) | 50 | 0 | 4 |
| Cheddar cheese | 2 triangles (15 g) | 60 | 0 | 4 |
| Bacon | 2 strips (9 g) | 45 | 0 | 3 |

Cheese and bacon add almost no carbohydrate. They add sodium and saturated fat, so they are not free. Vegetables add small amounts of carbohydrate and fiber, which is why the Veggie Delite salad has 9 g of carbohydrate and 4 g of fiber.
Sides and drinks can outweigh the sandwich
| Side or drink | Serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sugars (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple slices | 1 package (71 g) | 35 | 9 | — |
| Baked Lay’s chips | 32 g | 130 | 23 | — |
| Doritos Nacho Cheese | 50 g | 250 | 30 | 2 |
| Chocolate chip cookie | 45 g | 220 | 30 | 18 |
| Diet Coke | 21 oz | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| FUZE unsweetened tea | 21 oz | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Minute Maid Fruit Punch (100% juice) | 200 g | 100 | 24 | 21 |
| FUZE Sweet Tea | 21 oz | 170 | 44 | 44 |
| Coca-Cola Classic | 21 oz | 260 | 71 | 71 |

A single 21 oz Coca-Cola has 71 g of carbohydrate, more than a 6-inch turkey sub. Chips and a cookie together add 53 g (23 + 30). Water, diet soda, or unsweetened tea add almost nothing. Even “100% juice” has 24 g in the small serving listed. If you want a treat, a single cookie is 30 g, so count it as part of the meal, not as an extra.
A worked example: three orders, three totals
Here is how a simple ledger works. Add the carbohydrate grams from the tables above for everything you order. These three combinations use only the listed figures.
| Order | Items | Carbs (g) |
|---|---|---|
| A: the usual | 6-inch Oven Roasted Turkey (39) + Baked Lay’s (23) + Diet Coke (0) | 39 + 23 + 0 = 62 |
| B: bowl route | Turkey Breast bowl (11) + apple slices (9) + unsweetened tea (1) | 11 + 9 + 1 = 21 |
| C: the heavy one | 6-inch Teriyaki (54) + chocolate chip cookie (30) + Coca-Cola 21 oz (71) | 54 + 30 + 71 = 155 |
The same restaurant, the same lunch hour, and the totals range from 21 g to 155 g. Order C is more than seven times Order B, and the drink alone is nearly half of it. Order A, the most typical, lands in the middle. Where your own total should fall is a decision for you and your care team, since needs vary by medicine, weight, activity, and goals. Some people subtract fiber from the total and some do not, so ask which method your clinician prefers.
Build-your-own, step by step
- Choose the format first. Bowl or salad if you want the lowest bread load. A 6-inch sub if you want bread, and skip the footlong unless you plan to split it.
- Pick a protein. Turkey, chicken, and steak bowls are in the 160 to 370 calorie range with 25 to 36 g of protein. Meatballs and teriyaki bring more carbohydrate from the sauce.
- Load the vegetables. They add fiber and little carbohydrate.
- Pick a sauce deliberately. Mustard or vinegar for the least carbohydrate, Chipotle Southwest or mayo if you want creaminess. Skip the sweet onion and honey mustard if sugar is your concern.
- Choose a drink with no sugar. Water, diet soda, or unsweetened tea.
- Decide about the side before you order. Apple slices are 9 g, chips are 23 to 30 g, and a cookie is 30 g.
- Add up the ledger. Use the Subway app to confirm the totals for your exact build.
If you use a continuous glucose monitor, your own response is the real test. Our guide to reading your CGM data and the post-meal glucose tracker can help you compare the same meal on different days. One reading is a snapshot, and responses differ from person to person, so look at patterns. For the bigger food picture, see the diet for type 2 diabetes guide.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a wrap is lower in carbs than bread. The listed wrap has 50 g, more than any bread we checked.
- Trusting “fat free” on sauces. The fat-free sweet onion sauce has 9 g of carbohydrate in a small serving.
- Counting the sandwich and forgetting the drink. A 21 oz regular cola has 71 g.
- Ordering a footlong by habit. It roughly doubles the bread and the totals.
- Treating every bowl as low-carb. Teriyaki and meatball bowls each have 33 g.
- Ignoring sodium. Several items exceed 1,000 mg.
- Relying on old numbers. Recipes change, so confirm in the app.

Frequently asked questions
How many carbs are in a Subway sandwich?
It depends on the bread and the filling. Per FastFoodNutrition.org, which lists Subway as its source, a 6-inch Oven Roasted Turkey has 39 g of carbohydrate, an Italian B.M.T. has 39 g, a Meatball Marinara has 48 g, and a Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki has 54 g. A footlong roughly doubles the total. Confirm the numbers in the Subway app.
What is the lowest-carb thing at Subway?
Based on the figures we checked, the lowest-carbohydrate choices are salads and No Bready Bowls, such as the Veggie Delite salad at 9 g and the Turkey Breast or Oven Roasted Chicken bowls at 11 g. Sauces and sides can add to the total, so count them.
Is a Subway wrap better than bread for diabetes?
Not on carbohydrate. The listed wrap has 50 g, compared with 36 g for the 6-inch Italian or Hearty Multigrain bread. A bowl or salad avoids the bread entirely.
Which Subway sauces have sugar?
The fat-free sweet onion (8 g of sugar) and fat-free honey mustard (6 g) sauces have the most among those we checked, in a 21 g serving. Mustard, mayonnaise, and Chipotle Southwest have 0 g of sugar. Ranch has 2 g in a larger 2 oz serving.
Can I eat at Subway with type 2 diabetes?
Many people do. The choices that matter most are the bread or no bread, the sauce, the side, and the drink. Your clinician or dietitian can tell you the carbohydrate range that fits you, and a CGM can show how you personally respond.
Are Subway nutrition numbers exact?
No. The numbers in this guide come from a third-party database that lists Subway as its source, and many pages were last updated in 2021 or 2022. Menus and recipes change and vary by location, so check the Subway app or the label for your order.
