Applebee’s is the kind of restaurant where a person with diabetes has real choices and real traps. A plain grilled chicken breast or a sirloin sits at the bottom of the carbohydrate range, while a shared appetizer, a pasta dish, or a dessert can pass 100 grams on its own. This guide lays out the numbers we could verify, explains where the carbohydrate hides, and works through six example meals with the math shown. One warning before anything else: the nutrition data behind it is old. The pages we could reach are dated 2021, and restaurant menus change a lot in five years, so treat every number here as a starting point and check the current Applebee’s nutrition tool before you order.
Quick answer: yes, people with diabetes eat at Applebee’s, and the menu has options at both ends. In the 2021 data, the Grilled Chicken Breast lists 0 grams of carbohydrate and a Sirloin lists 1. A Classic Burger lists 45, a Chicken Tenders Plate 109, and a Triple Chocolate Meltdown dessert 126. Sides matter as much as mains: fries list 57 grams, steamed broccoli 6. Choosing the broccoli over the fries moves a Classic Burger meal from 102 grams to 51. Sodium is the second thing to watch: many entrees list more than 2,000 mg. This is general education, not a personal meal plan. Your care team knows your targets and your medicines.
How to read the numbers in this guide (and why they are dated)
Applebee’s own nutrition pages were not reachable when we wrote this, so every figure comes from FastFoodNutrition.org, a third-party site that credits Applebee’s as its source for each item. That has five consequences. First, the dates. Most pages we used say they were updated on April 27 or 28, 2021, and the dessert shake on August 27, 2021, which means the items may have been reformulated, resized, or dropped since. Second, the site does not say what each “order” includes. Some entrees at Applebee’s are served with sides, and we cannot tell whether the listed numbers include them. Where the numbers look too large for the item alone, we say so. Third, the site lists calories and protein but leaves carbohydrate blank for a few items, such as the 6 ounce sirloin, and we show a dash instead of guessing. Fourth, we found several suspicious values, which we flag where they appear. Fifth, we did not verify any section of the menu that Applebee’s may label as lighter, so we do not list one. If you want to practice turning a label into a carbohydrate count, our nutrition label carbs guide shows how to separate total carbohydrate, fiber, and sugar.
Burgers and sandwiches
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Burger | 781 | 45 | 940 |
| Classic Cheeseburger | 781 | 45 | 940 |
| Classic Bacon Cheeseburger | 881 | 46 | 1,230 |
| Quesadilla Burger | 1,331 | 50 | 3,000 |
| Bacon Cheddar Grilled Chicken Sandwich | 891 | 49 | 2,420 |
The burgers cluster between 45 and 50 grams of carbohydrate, and the bun is likely most of it, though the source does not break that out. The Classic Burger and Classic Cheeseburger list identical values in every column (781 calories, 45 grams of carbohydrate, 940 mg of sodium), which would mean the cheese adds nothing. That is almost certainly a copy error in the source, so we do not trust either row for the effect of cheese, and we would not read anything into the identical numbers. The Classic Bacon Cheeseburger lists 881 calories and 46 grams, which is the one real data point for the effect of adding bacon and cheese: about 100 more calories and 1 more gram of carbohydrate. The Quesadilla Burger lists 1,331 calories and 3,000 mg of sodium with 50 grams of carbohydrate. The Bacon Cheddar Grilled Chicken Sandwich lists 49 grams and 891 calories, which is a reminder that “chicken” on a bun is not automatically lower in carbohydrate than beef on a bun.
Whether these include fries is unclear. The listed calories for the burgers look like the sandwich alone, since fries are listed separately at 430 calories, and the Classic Burger’s 781 plus the fries’ 430 is 1,211, which is a plausible full plate. We have assumed the burgers are listed without sides but we have not confirmed it.
Steak, chicken, ribs, and seafood
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Chicken Breast | 190 | 0 | 860 |
| Sirloin Steak, 8 oz | 270 | 1 | 1,070 |
| Double-Glazed Baby Back Ribs, half rack | 460 | 1 | 350 |
| Cedar Grilled Lemon Chicken | 600 | 51 | 2,680 |
| Blackened Tilapia | 500 | 43 | 1,550 |
| Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp | 780 | 48 | 2,580 |
| Fiesta Lime Chicken | 1,170 | 97 | 3,740 |
| Chicken Tenders Plate | 1,151 | 109 | 2,800 |
This is the table with the widest spread, and it shows why “chicken” alone tells you little. The Grilled Chicken Breast lists 0 grams of carbohydrate with 40 grams of protein and 190 calories, and the 8 ounce Sirloin lists 1 gram with 45 grams of protein. Both look like the item alone, without sides. The Cedar Grilled Lemon Chicken lists 51 grams, the Blackened Tilapia 43, Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp 48, and Fiesta Lime Chicken 97. The Fiesta Lime Chicken and the Chicken Tenders Plate (109 grams, 1,151 calories) look like full plates with sides and breading, not the protein alone. We suspect the lemon chicken, tilapia, and Bourbon Street numbers also include their usual sides, but the source does not say. Compare them to the grilled chicken breast and you can see that something besides the protein is adding 40 to 50 grams.
The Double-Glazed Baby Back Ribs (half rack) list 1 gram of carbohydrate. That is implausible for a glazed rib, because a sweet glaze usually carries sugar, so this row may reflect the meat without the glaze or an error. We include it only because the source lists it, and we would not rely on it. If you plan around the ribs, ask the restaurant for the current glaze nutrition. The 6 ounce Sirloin lists 200 calories and 34 grams of protein but no carbohydrate, so we left it out of the table.
Sodium is the other column to read. The entrees in this table list between 350 mg (the ribs, probably wrong) and 3,740 mg (Fiesta Lime Chicken). A commonly cited general daily limit is 2,300 mg, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and several single entrees exceed it. Whether that matters for you depends on your blood pressure and your kidneys, and your clinician is the right person to ask. We raise it because many people who manage blood sugar are also managing blood pressure.
Pasta, bowls, and salads
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Three Cheese Chicken Penne | 490 | 34 | 1,210 |
| Classic Broccoli Chicken Alfredo Pasta | 1,271 | 78 | 2,950 |
| Southwest Chicken Bowl | 820 | 90 | 2,430 |
| Tex-Mex Shrimp Bowl | 710 | 91 | 2,170 |
| Oriental Grilled Chicken Salad | 1,311 | 94 | 2,240 |
The two pasta dishes show how much a source can vary. The Classic Broccoli Chicken Alfredo Pasta lists 78 grams of carbohydrate and 1,271 calories, which is consistent with a large restaurant pasta plate. The Classic Three Cheese Chicken Penne lists only 34 grams of carbohydrate at 490 calories. That is a very low carbohydrate figure for a penne dish, and we flag it as suspicious. The listing may be a smaller portion, a lunch size, or an error. Do not assume penne is a 34 gram dish without confirming.
The two “bowls” are not light on carbohydrate despite the name. The Southwest Chicken Bowl lists 90 grams and the Tex-Mex Shrimp Bowl 91, each with 10 grams of fiber, which probably comes from the rice and beans. They are the highest carbohydrate main dishes in this table, outside the tenders and the Fiesta Lime Chicken. The Oriental Grilled Chicken Salad lists 94 grams of carbohydrate, 47 grams of sugar, and 1,311 calories, which is a good reminder that a restaurant salad can be a full plate, not a bowl of greens; the source does not list the toppings, but the sugar figure points to a sweet dressing or sweet toppings. The source lists the version with Oriental Vinaigrette, and dressing choices change the numbers. If you want a salad, the useful move is to ask for the dressing on the side and choose a vinaigrette you can read the label on.
Appetizers
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boneless Wings | 681 | 52 | 1,600 |
| Mozzarella Sticks (without marinara) | 450 | 40 | 1,340 |
| Mozzarella Sticks (with marinara) | 901 | 80 | 2,690 |
| Spinach & Artichoke Dip with Salsa & Chips | 931 | 88 | 2,630 |
Appetizers are usually shared, and the source does not say how many people an order is meant for. The Boneless Wings list 52 grams of carbohydrate, which comes from the breading and sauce. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip with Salsa & Chips lists 88 grams and 931 calories, mostly from the chips. The Mozzarella Sticks have two listings that look wrong in a useful way: “without marinara” lists 450 calories and 40 grams, and “with marinara” lists 901 calories and 80 grams, which is almost exactly double. Marinara sauce does not add 450 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrate, so the second listing likely reflects a larger portion, not the sauce. We would read the lower line as one order and treat the other as unverified.
The practical point is that an appetizer is a meal-sized amount of carbohydrate in a restaurant like this. If you share it, divide the listed number by the number of people eating, which is our own division and not something the source states. Three people splitting the spinach dip would each get about 29 grams on this assumption. If you eat an appetizer, a plain protein entree with vegetables is a way to keep the whole meal in range.
Sides
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steamed Broccoli | 100 | 6 | 3 |
| Fire-Grilled Veggies | 150 | 9 | 3 |
| Garlicky Green Beans | 160 | 10 | 3 |
| House Salad | 120 | 12 | 2 |
| Garlic Mashed Potatoes | 280 | 37 | 4 |
| Fries | 430 | 57 | 4 |
| Onion Rings | 531 | 62 | 3 |
| Baked Potato | 530 | 59 | 4 |
The sides table is the most useful one in the guide, because sides are the easiest thing to change. Steamed broccoli lists 6 grams of carbohydrate and the fire-grilled veggies 9. The green beans list 10, and the house salad lists 12, though the source does not say whether that includes dressing. The garlic mashed potatoes list 37 grams, the fries 57, the onion rings 62, and the baked potato 59. The gap between broccoli and fries is 51 grams. Fries and Classic Fries list identical values in the source, which is probably two entries for the same item, and we show one.
The baked potato deserves a flag. It lists 530 calories, which is higher than a plain baked potato should be, so this may be a loaded potato with butter, cheese, and bacon, or a very large potato. The carbohydrate figure of 59 grams may be reasonable, but the calories suggest the item includes toppings. If you order one, ask what it comes with and how large it is.
Desserts and shakes
Source for this table: FastFoodNutrition.org item pages, which credit Applebee’s (applebees.com) as their source. The pages we used are dated April 27 and 28, 2021 (the shake is August 27, 2021). A dash means the page lists no value. Checked October 31, 2026.
| Item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oreo Cookie Shake | 870 | 107 | 1 |
| Triple Chocolate Meltdown with Vanilla Ice Cream | 1,071 | 126 | 8 |
The two desserts we pulled are far outside the rest of the menu. The Oreo Cookie Shake lists 870 calories, 107 grams of carbohydrate, and 75 grams of sugar. The Triple Chocolate Meltdown with Vanilla Ice Cream lists 1,071 calories, 126 grams of carbohydrate, and 71 grams of sugar. Each is larger in carbohydrate than the entire burger-and-fries meal in the example below. Some people with diabetes do have dessert, and no food is off limits by itself, but this is a reason to decide before you sit down whether you want one, share it, or skip it. The Applebee’s menu also has smaller desserts, which we did not verify.
Six example meals, computed
Each meal below is built from the numbers in the tables above and added in code. They use the listed values for the single items, so any side that is already included in an entree would be double counted. The first three are the simplest examples of how the side choice changes the total.
| Meal | Calories | Carbs (g) | Sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Burger plus Fries | 1,211 | 102 | 1,900 |
| Classic Burger plus Steamed Broccoli | 881 | 51 | 1,220 |
| Grilled Chicken Breast, Steamed Broccoli, House Salad | 410 | 18 | 1,330 |
| Sirloin 8 oz, Garlicky Green Beans, Fire-Grilled Veggies | 580 | 20 | 1,840 |
| Sirloin 8 oz, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Garlicky Green Beans | 710 | 48 | 2,200 |
| Spinach Dip, Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp, Oreo Shake | 2,581 | 243 | 5,650 |
The first two meals show the side effect. A Classic Burger with fries lists 102 grams of carbohydrate and 1,211 calories; the same burger with steamed broccoli lists 51 grams and 881 calories. The burger and bun carry the same 45 grams in both, and the side accounts for the difference.
The third and fourth meals are the low-carbohydrate end of the menu. The grilled chicken breast with broccoli and a house salad lists 18 grams of carbohydrate and 410 calories. The sirloin with green beans and fire-grilled veggies lists 20 grams and 580 calories. Both depend on the assumption that the entrees come without sides. The fifth meal, a sirloin with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans, lists 48 grams, which shows that one starchy side puts you near the burger range even with a lean entree.
The sixth meal is the one many people actually eat: a shared-size appetizer, an entree, and a shake or dessert. The spinach dip, the Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp, and the Oreo shake list 243 grams of carbohydrate, 2,581 calories, and 5,650 mg of sodium. That is more than twice the carbohydrate of the burger and fries, and it needed no unusual choices. Splitting the appetizer and the dessert is the simple way to bring the total down.
How to order with fewer surprises
A few habits help at a restaurant with this much variation. Look at the side first, since a side swap is the largest single change you can make for the least effort; the data show a 51 gram difference between fries and broccoli. Ask for sauces and dressings on the side, because the glazes and dressings that carry sugar are not listed separately in our source. Be careful with any item described as a bowl, a stir fry, a salad with crispy toppings, or a combo, since the tables above show these are often large in carbohydrate. And if your clinician has given you a carbohydrate target per meal, use the current Applebee’s nutrition calculator to check the exact items instead of relying on a 2021 table. Our restaurant guides hub has the other chains we have covered, if you want to compare.
If you have type 2 diabetes and are not on insulin
If your treatment does not require you to match insulin to carbohydrate, the useful question at Applebee’s is usually how big the carbohydrate load is and how it fits your day. The tables show the load is concentrated in the starch sides, the breading, the bowls, and the desserts. A plain protein with two non-starchy sides lists about 20 grams or less in our examples, while a loaded combo can pass 200. Many people find it easier to decide in the parking lot than at the table. A walk afterward can help some people, and our walking after meals guide covers what is known and what is not. Check with your clinician about whether activity after a meal is right for you.
If you have prediabetes
With prediabetes, many people want to keep eating out socially without feeling like they are failing. The numbers here suggest a workable approach: you can keep the restaurant, the friends, and the conversation, and change the one or two items that carry the most carbohydrate. In our examples, that is the fries and the dessert, not the entree. The diabetes food guide collects our single-food guides for the other pieces of the plate. A registered dietitian can help you turn this into a weekly pattern that fits your labs.
If you use a CGM
A continuous glucose monitor can show how your own body responds to a restaurant meal, which is more useful than any table. We cannot predict that response. If you want to learn from it, change one thing at a time, such as the side or whether you share the dessert, and compare the curve across several visits rather than one. Restaurant meals tend to be high in fat and sodium as well as carbohydrate, which can change the timing of a rise for some people, and your clinician can help you interpret what you see. Our guide to reading CGM data and the post-meal glucose tracker are a starting point.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is trusting the name of the dish. “Bowl,” “salad,” and “grilled” each hid a lot of carbohydrate in the tables above. The second is ignoring the side, which can be the largest carbohydrate item on the plate. The third is forgetting that an appetizer is a meal. The fourth is relying on old numbers: our source is from 2021. The fifth is treating suspicious listings as facts, like the 1 gram rib, the 34 gram penne, or the identical burger and cheeseburger rows. Use the tables to plan the order of magnitude, then verify the specific item in the current tool.
Myth versus fact
| Myth | What the data shows |
|---|---|
| “Grilled chicken is always low-carb.” | The grilled chicken breast lists 0 g, but the grilled lemon chicken lists 51 g and the chicken sandwich 49 g. |
| “A salad is the safe choice.” | The Oriental grilled chicken salad lists 94 g of carbohydrate and 47 g of sugar. |
| “Bowls are the light option.” | The two bowls list 90 and 91 g of carbohydrate. |
| “Sides don’t matter.” | Fries list 57 g and steamed broccoli 6 g, a 51 g difference. |
| “The numbers on this menu are current.” | Our source is dated April 2021. Check the current tool. |
Questions to bring to your appointment
Take these to your clinician or dietitian. How many grams of carbohydrate should a restaurant meal have for me? Should I count carbohydrate net of fiber? How should I think about sodium, given that many entrees in the data list more than 2,000 mg? Is it a good idea for me to share appetizers and desserts, and how should I count my portion? What should I do if I see a high or low reading after a restaurant meal? Which readings would you like me to bring in?
Frequently asked questions
Is Applebee’s okay for someone with diabetes?
No food is automatically off limits. In the 2021 data we used, the menu spans from 0 grams of carbohydrate for a grilled chicken breast to 126 grams for a chocolate dessert. Sides and shared appetizers move the total more than most people expect. Check what fits your plan with your care team.
What is the lowest-carb thing at Applebee’s?
In our source, the Grilled Chicken Breast lists 0 grams and the 8 ounce Sirloin lists 1 gram. The half rack of ribs lists 1 gram too, but that looks implausible for a glazed item. Sides and sauces add carbohydrate, and the data are from 2021.
How many carbs are in Applebee’s fries?
The source lists 57 grams of carbohydrate and 4 grams of fiber, with 430 calories. Steamed broccoli lists 6 grams, and the garlic mashed potatoes list 37.
Are the Applebee’s bowls low in carbs?
No. The Southwest Chicken Bowl lists 90 grams and the Tex-Mex Shrimp Bowl 91, with 10 grams of fiber each. They are among the higher-carbohydrate mains in our source.
Why do some numbers in this guide look strange?
Our source is a third-party site, and a few listings appear to be copy errors or different portion sizes: identical burger and cheeseburger rows, a rib dish with 1 gram of carbohydrate, a penne dish with 34 grams, and mozzarella sticks that list double with marinara. We flag them and do not rely on them.
How old is the Applebee’s data you used?
Most pages are dated April 27 or 28, 2021, and the shake is dated August 27, 2021. Menus change, so check Applebee’s current nutrition tool before ordering.
Are Applebee’s entrees high in sodium?
Many are. In our source, several entrees list more than 2,000 mg, and Fiesta Lime Chicken lists 3,740 mg. A commonly cited general daily limit is 2,300 mg. Ask your clinician what target is right for you.
How do I know how an Applebee’s meal affects my blood sugar?
The only way is to measure your own response across several meals, with a meter before and after, or a CGM. Our post-meal glucose tracker and CGM reading guide explain how to compare meals fairly, and your clinician can tell you which readings to act on.
