Costco is built for bulk buying, and that is exactly what makes it tricky when you are tracking carbohydrates. The packages are huge, the serving sizes on the label are small, and the food court sits at the exit with temptations of its own. This guide shows how to read Costco labels, which common items are lower or higher in carbohydrate, and how a few cart decisions change the totals.
Quick answer: At Costco the biggest carbohydrate surprises come from three places: items where the real portion is bigger than the label serving, “healthy” breakfast and snack foods with a lot of sugar or starch (granola, muffins, bars), and the food court. In the examples below, a cart of chicken, vegetables, Greek yogurt and almonds comes to 33 g of carbohydrate, while two bakery muffins alone come to 108 g. Labels differ by product and region, so check the package in front of you and ask your care team which carbohydrate range fits you. This is general education, not medical advice.
How to read these numbers
Costco does not publish one nutrition table for the whole store, and stock varies by warehouse and region, so this guide uses the sources we could actually open. The grocery figures come from Open Food Facts, a crowd-sourced database where many entries are copied from the package. The rotisserie chicken comes from the SmartLabel page for the Signature Cafe product. The food court figures come from a third-party site, Costco Guides, which says it rebuilt the numbers in October 2026 from the calories on Costco’s menu boards and does not name a source for each carbohydrate figure. Treat all of them as starting points, not as the final word on the package in your hand.
A dash in a table means the source did not list a value. It does not mean zero.
Five Costco label traps
- The serving is not the portion. The Kirkland ancient grains granola lists a 0.75 cup serving of 55 g on a 1 kg bag, which is about 18.2 servings. A bowl that holds a cup and a half is two servings, or roughly 78 g of carbohydrate on the listed numbers.
- One package can be one serving. The blueberry and cream muffin is listed as 1 muffin per serving at 115 g. Its page lists 54 g of carbohydrate, 28 g of sugars, and 25 g of added sugars for one.
- Look at added sugars, not just sugars. Plain Greek yogurt lists 4 g of sugars and 0 g added, because the sugar is naturally in the milk. The cashew clusters list 5 g of sugars with 4 g added.
- Be careful with “protein” and “keto” labels. The chewy protein bar page lists 16 g of total carbohydrate, 6 g of fiber, 6 g of sugars, and 10 g of protein per 40 g bar. Its ingredient list includes corn syrup, vegetable glycerin, and maltodextrin. Some people subtract fiber and sugar alcohols to get “net carbs,” but methods differ, and this site does not endorse a net carb number for dosing or treatment decisions. Ask your care team how they want you to count.
- Look for a fiber number. Two foods with the same total carbohydrate can behave differently in a meal plan. Quinoa lists 3 g of fiber per quarter cup dry, and the whole almonds list 4 g in just 28 g. Our nutrition label guide walks through the full label.
Proteins, eggs, and dairy
| Item and listed serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotisserie chicken, plain (3 oz, 84 g) | 160 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 22 |
| Atlantic salmon fillet (1 fillet, 196 g) | 400 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 35 |
| Organic large egg (1 egg, 53 g) | 70 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
| Organic plain Greek yogurt (170 g) | 100 | 7 | 0 | 4 | 18 |
Sources: SmartLabel (chicken, per 3 oz, no update date shown); Open Food Facts (salmon page last edited January 2025 and marked incomplete; eggs edited October 2026; yogurt edited August 2026). Package labels can change.
These are the easiest items to fit around a carbohydrate target. The chicken, salmon and eggs list 0 to 1 g of carbohydrate each. The rotisserie chicken lists 120 mg of sodium per 3 oz serving, and the page does not say whether it applies to every warehouse. The plain Greek yogurt lists 7 g of carbohydrate and 18 g of protein for 170 g, but flavored or sweetened yogurts are a different product, so read their labels separately.
Vegetables and grains
| Item and listed serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Organic mixed vegetables, frozen (85 g) | 40 | 10 | 3 | 3 | 2 |
| Organic quinoa, dry (1/4 cup, 45 g) | 170 | 30 | 3 | 1 | 6 |
| Ancient grains granola with almonds (0.75 cup, 55 g) | 250 | 39 | 6 | 9 | 5 |
Sources: Open Food Facts. The mixed vegetable page was edited May 2026. The quinoa page says its values were estimated from the ingredient list, not taken from the package. The granola values are calculated per serving from the per-100 g figures, and the page says it is incomplete.
Frozen mixed vegetables list 10 g of carbohydrate per 85 g, partly because mixed bags often contain corn and peas, so compare the bag you pick against a plain broccoli or cauliflower bag. Quinoa lists 30 g of carbohydrate in a quarter cup of dry grain, and that is before it absorbs water and becomes a larger portion. Granola is the item most likely to surprise people: about 39 g of carbohydrate in 55 g, with 9 g of sugars.
Nuts, snacks, and bars
| Item and listed serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole almonds (28 g) | 160 | 6 | 4 | 1 | 6 |
| Roasted, salted almonds snack bag (45 g) | 270 | 9 | 6 | 2 | 9 |
| Organic creamy almond butter (2 tbsp, 32 g) | 210 | 7 | 2 | 1 | 6 |
| Cashew clusters with almonds and pumpkin seeds (28 g) | 160 | 11 | 1 | 5 | 5 |
| Chewy protein bar (1 bar, 40 g) | 190 | 16 | 6 | 6 | 10 |
Sources: Open Food Facts. The roasted, salted almond bag page says its values were estimated from the ingredient list. The whole almond page was edited October 2026, the almond butter page March 2026, and the cashew clusters page July 2026. The protein bar page lists a 40 g bar, and pack sizes can differ by region.
Plain nuts are low in carbohydrate and high in calories, which is its own trade-off if weight is also a goal. The almond bag and the whole almonds are the same food in different portions: 28 g lists 160 calories, and the 45 g snack bag lists 270. Sweetened clusters and bars look similar on the shelf but list 11 to 16 g of carbohydrate.
Drinks and bakery
| Item and listed serving | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Organic unsweetened vanilla almond beverage (240 ml) | 30 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Blueberry and cream muffin (1 muffin, 115 g) | 460 | 54 | 1 | 28 | 6 |
Sources: Open Food Facts. The almond beverage page lists the vanilla unsweetened version; other flavors differ. The muffin page says it is not complete.
Unsweetened almond beverage lists 1 g of carbohydrate per 240 ml cup, while the bakery muffin lists 54 g in one. Those two numbers are a good reminder that “plain” and “baked goods” at the same store can sit at opposite ends of the scale.
The food court
| Food court item | Calories | Carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Sugars (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot dog with bun | 580 | 42 | – | – | 23 |
| Chicken Caesar salad | 710 | 35 | – | – | 57 |
| Chicken bake | 840 | 83 | – | – | 52 |
| Cheese pizza slice | 710 | 78 | – | – | 41 |
| Pepperoni pizza slice | 710 | 77 | – | – | 33 |
| Hot turkey and provolone sandwich | 740 | 65 | – | – | 45 |
| Coca-Cola (20 oz) | 240 | – | – | 65 | 0 |
| Strawberry banana smoothie | 320 | – | – | 69 | – |
| Cold brew mocha freeze | 580 | 116 | – | 111 | 12 |
| Berry sundae | 650 | 86 | – | – | 10 |
| Double chocolate chunk cookie | 750 | 106 | – | 65 | 10 |
Source: Costco Guides, updated October 12, 2026. Calories were rebuilt from Costco menu boards, and the site does not name a source for each carbohydrate figure. It also notes that some sources list the chicken bake at about 770 calories, against the 840 shown here, and says Costco has not published a full panel to settle it. Items rotate, and some are seasonal or only at certain warehouses.
Two drinks stand out. The 20 oz Coca-Cola lists 65 g of sugars, and the cold brew mocha freeze lists 116 g of carbohydrate with 111 g of sugars. A hot dog with the bun lists 42 g of carbohydrate, so a hot dog with a 20 oz Coke is at least 107 g counting the 42 g plus the 65 g of sugar from the drink. The chicken Caesar salad lists 35 g, which is the lowest of the main items, but the page does not say whether the dressing and croutons are included.
A worked example: four carts
These are example carts built only from the listed servings above, with the arithmetic shown. They are illustrations, not recommendations.
| Cart | What is in it | Carb math | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cart A: lower-carb dinner and snack | Rotisserie chicken, plain, Organic mixed vegetables, frozen, Organic mixed vegetables, frozen, Organic plain Greek yogurt, Whole almonds | 0 + 10 + 10 + 7 + 6 = 33 g | 11 g |
| Cart B: dinner with quinoa instead of yogurt and almonds | Rotisserie chicken, plain, Organic mixed vegetables, frozen, Organic mixed vegetables, frozen, Organic quinoa, dry | 0 + 10 + 10 + 30 = 50 g | 10 g |
| Cart C: the “healthy” breakfast and snack | Ancient grains granola with almonds, Organic plain Greek yogurt, Organic creamy almond butter, Chewy protein bar | 39 + 7 + 7 + 16 = 69 g | 14 g |
| Cart D: bakery run | Blueberry and cream muffin, Blueberry and cream muffin | 54 + 54 = 108 g | 2 g |
Cart A comes to 33 g of carbohydrate. Swapping the yogurt and almonds for a quarter cup of dry quinoa (Cart B) gives 50 g, and the quinoa alone is 30 g. Cart C is the one that looks the healthiest on the label and comes to 69 g, because granola, almond butter and a bar all carry carbohydrate. Two muffins come to 108 g. The difference between Cart A and Cart C is 36 g, and it comes from the choice of foods, not from how much was bought.
Common mistakes
- Counting the package as one serving. Costco sizes make this easy. Read the serving size and the servings-per-container line first.
- Trusting “protein” or “high fiber” on the front. Turn the package over and read the carbohydrate, fiber and added sugar lines.
- Treating the food court as separate. A combo, a slice, and a large drink can use more carbohydrate than the rest of the shopping trip.
- Assuming the same product is the same everywhere. Costco rotates items, and labels differ by region and package size.
- Using a net carb number for decisions without checking. Different brands and counting methods give different totals. Ask your care team what they use.

Frequently asked questions
Is Costco good for people with diabetes?
Costco carries many foods that fit a lower-carbohydrate plan, such as eggs, plain Greek yogurt, fish, rotisserie chicken, nuts and frozen vegetables, and it also sells many high-carbohydrate items, such as granola, muffins and pizza. The result depends on what goes in the cart and on the portion size.
Is the Costco rotisserie chicken low in carbohydrate?
The SmartLabel page for the Signature Cafe traditional rotisserie chicken lists 0 g of carbohydrate, 22 g of protein and 120 mg of sodium per 3 oz serving. Seasoned and flavored versions can differ, so check the label.
Are Kirkland protein bars good for diabetes?
It depends on the bar and on how your care team wants you to count carbohydrate. The chewy bar page we checked lists 16 g of total carbohydrate, 6 g of fiber, 6 g of sugars and 10 g of protein per 40 g bar. Its ingredients include corn syrup and vegetable glycerin. Compare the full label before you decide.
What is the lowest-carb food court item?
On the figures we found, the chicken Caesar salad lists the least carbohydrate of the main items at 35 g, but the source does not say whether dressing and croutons are included. The hot dog with bun lists 42 g, and the pizza slices list 77 to 78 g.
Are the food court numbers reliable?
Not fully. Costco does not publish a full panel for every item, and the source we used rebuilt the numbers from menu board calories. It notes that some sources list the chicken bake at about 770 calories instead of 840. Treat the numbers as estimates.
Why do serving sizes at Costco look so small?
Bulk packages use the same serving sizes as small ones. A 1 kg bag of granola lists a 55 g serving, so one bag holds many servings, and a normal bowl can be two servings or more. Always multiply by the number of servings you actually eat.
