How to Read a Berberine Certificate of Analysis

A COA can be a useful quality document or a decorative PDF. The difference is whether it identifies the tested product, lot, method, specifications, and actual results.

Quick answer: A useful COA should identify the tested material or finished product, match a lot or batch, name the laboratory, show test dates and methods, list specifications and actual results, and address relevant identity, potency, microbial, and contaminant questions. It does not prove that berberine is effective for you.

What a certificate of analysis is

A certificate of analysis is a report of tests performed on a material or product. It may come from the manufacturer's laboratory or an independent laboratory. The title alone does not establish independence, completeness, or relevance.

Some COAs apply to a raw ingredient before capsules are manufactured. Others apply to a finished batch. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions.

The seven COA checks that matter

Product identity: Does the report name the same ingredient or finished product sold?

Lot or batch: Does the report number match the bottle or manufacturing record?

Laboratory: Who performed the tests, and is the relationship to the brand clear?

Dates: When was the sample received, tested, and reported?

Methods: Are recognized test methods or method references listed?

Specifications and results: Does the report show both the acceptable range and the actual measured result?

Authorization: Is the report signed, approved, or otherwise traceable to a responsible reviewer?

Identity and potency are different questions

Identity asks whether the material is what it claims to be. Potency or assay asks how much of a specified compound is present. A passing identity test does not automatically prove the labeled amount, and a single potency number does not establish the absence of contaminants.

For a botanical extract, the report should make clear whether it tested berberine itself, berberine HCl, a branded complex, a plant extract, or another material.

Contaminant testing needs context

A COA may include heavy metals, microbial limits, pesticides, residual solvents, or other tests. The relevant panel depends on the ingredient, source, manufacturing process, and product form.

A line that says "pass" is more useful when the specification, method, and actual result or reporting limit are visible. A blank or selectively cropped panel cannot be evaluated.

Raw-material COA versus finished-product COA

A raw-material COA can show that an incoming ingredient met specifications before manufacturing. It cannot by itself prove that the correct amount reached each finished capsule or that the final product remained uncontaminated during production.

A finished-product test is closer to the bottle the consumer uses. The strongest quality system may include supplier qualification, raw-material identity, in-process controls, and finished-batch verification.

What third-party seals add

NIH Office of Dietary Supplements explains that independent quality organizations allow qualifying products to display seals indicating that they were properly manufactured, contain listed ingredients, and do not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants. Examples include NSF, USP, and ConsumerLab.

The same official guidance warns that these seals do not guarantee safety or effectiveness. A verification program evaluates defined quality requirements, not whether the supplement will lower a particular person's A1C.

What a COA cannot prove

That the supplement will work for a particular person.

That a structure-function claim is clinically meaningful.

That the product is safe with every medicine.

That the tested sample represents every bottle if sampling controls are unknown.

That a newer delivery form produces better long-term outcomes.

That FDA approved the product.

That passing minimum specifications equals best-in-class quality.

Questions to send the company

Ask for the lot-specific finished-product COA, the testing laboratory, whether the lab is independent, which tests were performed on raw material versus finished capsules, and how the tested lot maps to the bottle. A transparent company should answer clearly or explain legitimate confidentiality limits without turning the request into a sales pitch.

Is every COA independent?

Should the lot number match my bottle?
