Sodium and Blood Pressure: What the Evidence Actually Shows

Cutting sodium is standard blood pressure advice. What's less commonly explained is that not everyone's blood pressure responds to sodium the same way, and there's no simple test to tell you which camp you're in.

What a practical approach actually looks like

Focus on reducing processed, packaged, and restaurant food rather than only the salt shaker, since that's where most dietary sodium comes from.

Read nutrition labels for sodium content rather than assuming a food "tastes salty enough to worry about."

Consider the DASH eating pattern as a whole, not sodium reduction in isolation, since the combined pattern has more trial evidence behind it than sodium changes alone.
