Three examples that show why context matters

Triglycerides of 120 mg/dL and HDL of 40 mg/dL produce a ratio of 3.0. Triglycerides of 240 mg/dL and HDL of 80 mg/dL also produce 3.0. The first profile has triglycerides in the generally healthy range, while the second has high triglycerides. The ratio alone hides that distinction.

A third person with triglycerides of 600 mg/dL and HDL of 50 mg/dL has a ratio of 12. That number is high, but the clinical priority is not refining a ratio interpretation. A fasting triglyceride value in that range needs prompt evaluation for secondary causes and pancreatitis prevention.

These examples also show why a falling ratio can be ambiguous. It may fall because triglycerides improved, because HDL rose, or because both changed. The underlying values reveal which process moved.
